Designer Tip of the Week: Don’t make your own PMS swatches!

I like to point out other designers mistakes, it makes me feel better about myself. Recently I received some master art files which included custom spot color swatches. This is pretty common in the design / art field. But I draw the line at making your own custom mixes for actual PMS colors and sending those files out as master art. Why? Because its not the right color! If you make it the wrong color, and you send it out for print production, chances are, prepress will not catch it. When your final product comes out the wrong color, don’t go crying to the printhouse. Its your fault. Programs like Adobe Illustrator come with PMS swatches built in. Or you can download them from Pantone, Inc. Use them.
